Meet The Goodells: Arizona Cardinals
Well, we have to look at other NFC West teams besides the 49ers at some point. The NFL preview continues…
2011 RECORD – 8-8: My favorite bizarro fact about the 2011 Arizona Cardinals? Despite being saddled with the anti-awesome twosome (Kevin Kolb and John Skelton) at quarterback, 13 of Arizona’s 16 games were decided by seven points or less. The Cardinals weren’t particularly exceptional at anything last year but managed to hang around in games late. After a 1-6 start, the Cards finished 7-2, in part thanks to Skelton’s play while Kolb missed time with turf toe. Rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson made the All-Pro team after returning four punts for scores last season; and of course, Larry Fitzgerald is still Larry Fitzgerald.

DON’T TAKE THIS GUY IN YOUR FANTASY DRAFT: Kevin Kolb. The ex-Eagles quarterback is the 43rd highest paid athlete in America (made $17.5 million last year). Let me repeat: KEVIN KOLB IS THE 43RD HIGHEST PAID ATHLETE IN AMERICA! The only thing more astonishing is that three Cardinals are in the top 50 of that same list (Fitzgerald and Calais Campbell are the others). Kolb didn’t live up to his preposterous $63 million contract in 2011. He ranked 30th among fantasy quarterbacks in standard scoring last year; lost six straight games; and is embroiled in a quarterback controversy with Skelton. If he is a regular starter for your fantasy team, that probably means you drank one too many Golden Monkeys on draft day.
NOTABLE GAME: September 23 vs. Philadelphia. One of the low moments of Philadelphia’s season came last November, when the Eagles blew two fourth quarter leads to the Skelton-led Cards in a 21-17 win for ‘Zona. The scene switches to Arizona in 2012 as Kolb may finally get a chance to play his former team. Hopefully, Philadelphia’s upcoming trip to Arizona is better than their last one.
CARDINAL YOU SHOULD FOLLOW ON TWITTER: Darnell Dockett. He is one crazy cat.

WHY THEY CAN’T WIN THE SUPER BOWL: Besides the obvious quarterback mess, Arizona is still short-handed defensively. Peterson is going to be a beast at cornerback and Campbell and Dockett are strong at defensive end, but that’s about it. The Cardinals tied for 26th by forcing just 19 turnovers. They’ll need a lot more playmakers in their back seven to be a serious threat in the NFC.

Kevin Kolb is not going to lead Arizona back to a Super Bowl…and neither is John Skelton. However, Ken Whisenhunt has to stick with one guy and live with it.
Arizona’s best chance for success is to stay away from playing musical chair quarterbacks. Of course, Kolb could do a lot to solve that problem by playing like the guy Arizona hoped they were getting.
