It appears this week is all about head coaches and quarterbacks trying to rebuild self-esteem.
Our latest tale in Chicken Soup for the NFL Quarterback’s Soul comes from San Francisco.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh presented a challenge to his starting quarterback Alex Smith recently at the end of 49ers’ Fan Fest.
Harbaugh wanted his offense to recreate the legendary drive that resulted in Joe Montana leading his troops 89 yards in 14 plays for a go-ahead touchdown to Dwight Clark against the dreaded Dallas Cowboys in the 1981 NFC title game.
Thus, the ’11 Niners had 4:54 to complete the drive just like their predecessors did 29 years earlier.
The only difference proved to be the starting point. Harbaugh had Smith and company start the drive from their 8 instead of the 11 yard line like Joe Cool’s gang.
Smith’s results did not conjure up memories of that fabled day on January 10, 1982.
The drive ended after four plays, when Smith was sacked on fourth down. He was booed for his troubles.
If anything, it served as a reaffirmation that San Francisco needs a quarterback.
That Andrew Luck fella would look good in a 49er uniform.
