John Elway doesn’t strike me as someone who would have The Sex Pistols or The Clash on his iPod (if he owns one).
After a recent run-in with a punk rock band, he is not likely to be caught listening to I Heard It Through The Grapevine by The Slits.
“Elway”, a Colorado-based punk rock group received a letter from representatives of the former Broncos quarterback stating that the band should no longer use the name.
The band’s lead singer, Tim Browne, told the Associated Press that the name change was nothing more than a way to capture local spirit.
“None of us really care about football that much. It’s not a direct reference to John Elway, said Browne.
“We make no mention of him in records or in our artwork. He’s local color, part of the local vernacular that people understand.”
Formerly known as “10-4 Eleanor”, the band plans on keeping the name despite Elway’s camp pressing for a switch.
“We’re not out to get John Elway. This situation is hilarious and he needs to loosen up. Life’s too short to worry about a punk rock band using your name.”
The real Elway is not a believer of a band that performs, as he puts it, “in front of about 30 people in a basement.”
