Most serious football fans probably remember the 1992 AFC Wild Card game featuring the Buffalo Bills and Houston Oilers.
Of course, the Bills overcame a 35-3 second half deficit behind backup quarterback Frank Reich to defeat the Oilers 41-38 in overtime.
What is lost with some younger folks is that the Buffalo meltdown wasn’t the first Houston implosion.
One year earlier, the Oilers trashed another double-digit lead on the road at Denver in the AFC Divisional playoff round.
Houston led 21-6 in the second quarter and then, 24-23 with minutes remaining.
Backed up at their own 2 late in the fourth quarter, the Broncos needed to get into field goal range. Somehow, Houston allowed John Elway to convert two fourth downs including a 44-yard completion on 4th and 10 to Vance Johnson.
Moments later, Denver’s David Treadwell put the Oilers out of their misery.
Epic fail.
