Around this time last year, we did a DVD blog on (500) Days of Summer, a film starring maneater Zooey Deschanel.
A year later, we revisit Deschanel in her television project New Girl, which is about three guys living with a girl named Jess Day (played by Deschanel).
While her character doesn’t appear to be a wild departure from a realistic person; her roommates are a far different beast.
Schmidt – This show’s version of How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney Stinson. He talks really fast and wore a trashbag as an adult diaper during the season opener because he suffered an injury in the man region. Classy. Much like Stinson, Schmidt has a book called “The Douche Journals”. You can’t make this stuff up.

Nick Miller – The Herb to Deschanel’s Peaches. Recently, he made out with Jess, only to feel exceptionally awkward about doing so. He makes weird noises…a lot. When he feels uncomfortable, he moonwalks out of places. Also, made a “no nail” with Winston and Schmidt once Jess became a roommate.

Winston – This African-American youngster serves as a filler guy. He is typically painted as incompetent with women and the group’s clown prince. During a previous episode, he saddled up to Brooklyn Decker’s character. Due to his inability to pick up women, he died a rapid death.
What in the world is anyone supposed to learn from these three guys?
For example, during Tuesday night’s “Parking Spot” show, Nick licked a wrapper with chocolate on it that was lying on the ground.
I like my television with some realism, thank you. That’s television for the mindless.
Are men weird? Sure, but do you have friends that act like these three guys? It’s the most unrealistic show for men to hit television since Cop Rock.
It would appear that the show’s central theme is pretty simple to figure out.
Miss Day is the ringmaster while the circus performers (Nick, Schmidt, and Winston) go along with her commands.
Somehow, I think Zooey likes it that way.
