Dr. Z

Paul Zimmerman and Peter King, two of the best football writers around, hamming it up.

Few writers display the pure love of football the way Paul Zimmerman does. From his mailbags to his annual rankings of the network television crews, Dr.Z’s style is based on enthusiasm for the game and most importantly, a keen insight to the game that few possess.

These are tough times for the good Dr. Z, who is recovering from a pair of strokes that left him unable to write or speak. Recently, friends, colleagues and admirers convened in West Orange, New Jersey to help raise money for an aggressive form of treatment that hopefully will give Zimmerman an opportunity to return to the writing ranks.
According to SI’s Peter King, total contributions have reached roughly $200,000 is which a testament to how beloved Zimmerman is throughout the football world.

So many people have chimed in with tributes regarding Dr. Z but I’d be remiss if I didn’t throw my two cents in. Today’s sportswriting, whether it is blogging or just plain newspaper, often lacks any form of significant insight outside of (insert name) is one of the all-time greats or (insert name) is a not an effective player. Sensationalism replaced content a long time ago, which is why we have a generation of not-so intelligent football fans in training but that’s another story for another day.

What helped separate him from many of his contemporaries is that he told you why based off of following the game through analysis. Remember that? In today’s kill or be killed mentality of sports reporting, luckily for us Zimmerman actually took time to tell you why something was happening instead of mindlessly ripping a player for no reason or today’s common fair of getting on the proverbial television soapbox to come with ideas and concepts that make zero sense.

I’m ashamed to admit this but while I’ve read my fair share of football books, I have yet to read his book, A Thinking Man’s Guide To Pro Football, which received rave reviews. It has escaped my grasp all of these years but I’m on the way to fixing that problem.

Thank you Dr. Z. Best wishes on your impending treatment and may you return to the craft you love soon.
