In the upcoming 2010 MLB preview issue, Sports Illustrated not only put Roy Halladay on the cover but the magazine also picked the Phillies to win the World Series. While such an event should be a signal of just how far the franchise has come in the last decade, the skeptic in me feels a bit unsettled.
SI’s track record of successfully predicting World Series champs is awful at best. Since 1997, the magazine only correctly nabbed the ’99 Yankees to win it all in its preview mag.
Thus, the Phillies have been touched by the hand of the SI jinx. Here is hoping they print a retraction soon and pick the St. Louis Cardinals to beat the Rays instead of the Phils.
