According to ESPN.com, the NFLPA is urging some of the top prospective draft picks to boycott April’s NFL Draft.
As a part of their plan, the union contacted the top 17 prospects and suggested they not attend.
Prior to the draft, the league typically invites 15-20 players to attend the festivities. However, their lack of appearance would mean they would not be available for in-person interviews, which has often been a staple of draft-day coverage.
The only word from the NFL came via spokesman Greg Aiello:
We plan to invite the 15-20 top prospects and their families to New York as we normally do for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. And, as always, it is the decision of the players and their families as to whether they attend.
Another rumored angle to this would be draft picks doing post-selection interviews on competing networks.
That is all well and fine but the draft is covered by ESPN and the NFL Network.
Where would they go? The Food Network? HBO? MTV? Versus?
Either do interviews or don’t do them. Playing the competing network card makes little sense.
The only other viable option would be utilizing social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), which makes a bit more sense.
Their boycott would seem more gripping if they skipped television appearances altogether and just stuck with social media.
Regardless of how the draft turns out, the now-decertified NFLPA will be heard from in way or another.
