It was déjà vu all over again for the New England Patriots.
Eli Manning and the New York Giants staged a 24-20 comeback win over the Patriots on Sunday, which featured similar properties to the G-Men’s 17-14 Super Bowl XLII victory in February 2008.
Tight end Jake Ballard played the role of unknown hero as David Tyree did over three years ago by coming up with a difficult catch in Patriots territory that set the table for the game-winning score.
After Ballard’s 28-yard reception to the New England 33, Patriots safety Sergio Brown drew a 20-yard defensive pass interference call while in coverage against New York’s Victor Cruz.
Brown’s penalty placed the ball at the New England 1. Three plays later, the Giants had their 24-20 lead.
Leading 17-13, the Giants allowed Tom Brady and the Patriots to drive 64 yards in nine plays for the go-ahead touchdown, a 14-yard reception by Rob Gronkowski on a 4th and 8 play.
Once New England took a 20-17 lead with 1:36 left in the game, Manning marched 80 yards for the game-winning score.
The 44 combined points were all scored in the second half after the two teams combined for the initial scoreless first half in a game this season.
The 6-2 Giants earned a much-needed win in the tight NFC East.
Meanwhile, 5-3 New England drops into a three-way tie for first place in the AFC East with a big meeting with the New York Jets in MetLife Stadium next Sunday night.
