Mad Men

Peggy Olson, Advertising Queen & NFL Prognosticator

Mad Men returned to television on Sunday night with a morbid and dark episode titled “The Doorway.”

Set in December 1967, this episode focused on Don Draper’s not-so-subtle obsession with death and his omnipresent sense of loneliness.

And by loneliness, I mean Don’s desire to sleep with other women besides his wife.

Besides Don’s histrionics, one of the show’s many beacons of light is Peggy Olson.

After escaping the advertising womb of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, Olson is quickly morphing into Don Draper 2.0 at Cutler, Gleason, and Chaough.

During “The Doorway,” Olson speaks to a pastor over the phone while searching for Chaough regarding a Super Bowl advertisement.

At one point during her conversation, the pastor asks Peggy who will reach the Super Bowl.

Acting as if she was a descendant of Vince Lombardi, Peggy states that the Super Bowl will likely be “Oakland or Houston against Green Bay.”

Peggy’s estimation proved to be a pretty good guess. Green Bay was days away from winning the epic Ice Bowl over the Dallas Cowboys and winning a third straight NFL championship.

Meanwhile, Houston lost to Oakland in the AFL title game.

In January 1968, Lombardi’s Packers defeated Oakland 33-14 to win Super Bowl II in what proved to be the legendary leader’s final game as Green Bay’s head coach.

Who says girls don’t know football?

Nicely done Peggy.
