Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had tons of fun last Wednesday during their Super Bowl parade. Before stumbling off the boat thanks to the dangerous avocado tequila, Brady managed to offend someone close to the designer of the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Lorraine Grohs, the daughter of Greg Grohs, who designed the first Lombardi Trophy in 1967 until 1994, was upset over Brady tossing the famous prize from his $2 million boat to another boat that included teammates Rob Gronkowski and Cameron Brate.

“It just upset me that this trophy was disgraced and disrespected by being thrown as if it was a real football,” said Lorraine Grohs.

“I’ve seen this trophy being made at the factory at Tiffany’s (where her father originally crafted the trophy) and it’s a beautiful trophy. My father had to chisel the seams, he had to chisel the seams by hand. There is a newspaper article that shows him working on that trophy. The ball is hand-formed and the base is as well.”

Grohs, who is a resident of Fort Myers, Florida, stated Brady’s boat toss apparently caused her some stress and loss of sleep. Ultimately, she feels that an apology is necessary. “I personally would like an apology, not just to me and my family and the other silversmiths but to the fans, all the football fans the other team players.”

To be honest, this seems like a rather gross overreaction to a unique situation. First of all, the players are on boats. How do you expect them to transfer the trophy? By hanging it on a wire? Put it in an emergency craft?

Also, if folks are worried about the purity of a trophy, they ought to investigate the Stanley Cup, which has been defiled plenty of times. Tossing a trophy to a teammate on a boat is rather tame in comparison.

If they were that disrespectful of the trophy, I’m sure it would have ended up in the bottom of the bay.
