It was only a matter of time before we heard from Deion Sanders on the McNabb trade to Washington. Thursday night on the NFL Network, Sanders voiced his opinion on the deal and proclaimed it the “dumbest trade ever.”
Sanders, who has never been in love with much related to Philadelphia, bashed Eagles management for trading McNabb to the division rival Washington Redskins:
“First of all, I gathered myself and sat down because I couldn’t believe that this was the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life, except for that Herschel Walker ‘shibocle’ years ago. But you trade a guy in your own division that you got to see him twice, and you have [Kevin] Kolb, [LeSean] McCoy, [Jeremy] Maclin and – seven years amongst the complete trio of playmakers that you have for an 11-year guy that has taken you to five NFC championships and a Super Bowl. Man, are you kidding me?”
Some of the buzz on the ‘net regarding Deion’s comments surround his usage of the word “shibocle”. No matter how bizarre that word is (or its origin), message received from Prime.
It will be awhile before we can truly gauge whether this deal was worth the hassle. However, Deion’s opinion shows to a degree that he has quite a bug about the Eagles (non-McNabb related) and the city of Philadelphia.
It probably still stems from the infamous Michael Irvin injury at Veterans Stadium back in ’99. While Irvin laid on the wet turf with a career-ending neck injury, Eagles fans cheered and then booed Sanders as he did some sort of dance while his teammate was injured.
Then, in ’08 the Eagles benched McNabb prior to the NFL Network’s Thanksgiving matchup between the Eagles and Cardinals. After McNabb’s benching and subsequent resurrection during the ’08 season, Sanders played the “McNabb doesn’t get respect” card often on the television and even managed to slam Eagles fans in the process immediately following the Thanksgiving night game:
“Can I tell them something for you? First of all, I would like to tell all these idiotic fans to shut-up. Don’t get on his bandwagon now. You’re the same guys who booed him on his first incompletion.”
So Philadelphia, Deion Sanders really doesn’t like you or this trade. I’m guessing this feeling is very mutual.
