The 2010 NFL Draft is open for business and that means it’s time for a live blog…

7:34PM: Big Roger Goodell steps to the podium to tells us that the NFL Draft is officially open…I’m going to look for a pic of Sam Bradford. Unless something wild happens, he’s going number one to the Rams.

7:38: Yep…that didn’t take long.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Sam+Bradford&iid=6347204″ src=”3/3/7/e/BYU_v_Oklahoma_f6e3.jpg?adImageId=12626628&imageId=6347204″ width=”380″ height=”258″ /]

1. ST. LOUIS RAMS: SAM BRADFORD, QB, OKLAHOMA

Quick analysis: Bradford looks dapper in a gray suit. Considering the porous nature of the Rams offensive line, that’s as clean as he’ll look all year. Alright, I’m off to a bad start. Just an awful joke. Seriously though, the Rams cleared the deck for him at quarterback by dropping Marc Bulger. He should play right away. The shoulder injury is a bit of a concern considering he’s already met the legendary Dr. James Andrews at his young age. The Rams throw a fastball with the first pick, nothing tricky.

7:43: Detroit, you’re on the clock…no skill players please.

7:44: Detroit is not messing around…

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Suh&iid=7526031″ src=”2/1/9/8/Pacific_Life_Holiday_0036.jpg?adImageId=12626703&imageId=7526031″ width=”380″ height=”249″ /]

2. DETROIT LIONS: NDAMUKONG SU, DT, NEBRASKA

Quick analysis: Again, another layup pick. Suh may very give Detroit some toughness in the middle of the defensive line which is something they desperately need. Remember their infamous 0-16 campaign in 2008? In my opinion, bad line play was the major culprit in them pulling an 0 for the season. They were not much better in ’09 finishing dead last in defense.

7:49: NFL Network is on it early, already showing McCoy presumably on the phone with the Bucs. Geez. The Big 12 is going to be 3 for 3.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Gerald+McCoy&iid=3270744″ src=”c/b/f/f/Big_12_Football_e65c.jpg?adImageId=12626735&imageId=3270744″ width=”380″ height=”253″ /]

3. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: GERALD MCCOY, DT, OKLAHOMA

Quick analysis: McCoy’s idol growing up was Warren Sapp. Tampa needs him to play like it to turn around a defense and bring it back to prominence.

7:55: Football reference…Mike Mayock just dropped the phrase “five technique”. I love chalk talk. Meanwhile, Deion describes McCoy and other draftees as “loosiest and goosiest”. Fair enough Deion.

4. WASHINGTON REDSKINS: TRENT WILLIAMS, OT, OKLAHOMA

Quick analysis: Three of the first four players taken are Sooners. The Redskins grab a tackle to help their newly acquired quarterback, that McNabb fella. He’ll also block for one of the oddest backfields in recent memory. Larry Johnson, Willie Parker, and Clinton Portis just sounds like a timebomb looking for somewhere to detonate. Nonetheless, Williams makes four straight Big 12 players.

8:06: I smell a small surprise coming…

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Eric+Berry&iid=7442828″ src=”8/f/5/6/ChickFilA_Bowl_805e.jpg?adImageId=12626805&imageId=7442828″ width=”380″ height=”305″ /]

5. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: ERIC BERRY, S, TENNESSEE

Quick analysis: The Chiefs finally break up the homage to Big 12 football by taking Eric Berry. He is a very quick and versatile player that should be an impact guy pretty quickly for Kansas City. By the way, NFL.com’s Gil Brandt ranked Berry as his number one guy. My favorite thing about Berry? His nickname is the “Fifth Dimension”. Brilliant.

8:13: What a sports night…NBA & NHL playoffs, MLB, and the draft. How does one decide?

8:14: No Walter Jones for Seattle this season. I think we know how this movie will end.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=russell+okung&iid=8288836″ src=”9/e/1/5/2010_NFL_Combine_e924.jpg?adImageId=12626847&imageId=8288836″ width=”380″ height=”253″ /]

6. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: RUSSELL OKUNG, OT, OKLAHOMA ST.

Quick analysis: Okung is associated with words like “decleater” and terms like “road grater”. He’ll be a part of the project to replace perennial Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones. Quick sidenote…is everyone still trying to figure out who Charlie Whitehurst is?

8:20: Cleveland is up and allegedly, they don’t dig Jimmy Clausen….uh oh. Dez Bryant sighting via satellite. Hmmm….

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Joe+Haden&iid=7048327″ src=”0/9/2/8/Florida_v_South_fb09.jpg?adImageId=12626882&imageId=7048327″ width=”380″ height=”251″ /]

7. CLEVELAND BROWNS: JOE HADEN, CB, FLORIDA

Quick analysis: Haden is sporting a sleek gray suit with a black vest. Easily the best dressed so far. It’s not a flashy pick by the Browns but an effective one. Mayock keeps talking about guys’ hips, which is important. He doesn’t like Haden’s hips but says he’s a tough player. They’ll need it. Only the Lions were worse defensively than the Browns.

8:28: AL DAVIS IS ON THE CLOCK!!! BUCKLE UP!

8. OAKLAND RAIDERS: ROLANDO MCCLAIN, LB, ALABAMA

Quick analysis: Wow. The Raiders do something that make the fellow New Yawkers very envious. Geez. Slow down Buffalo. I’m trying to live blog here. The Bills are about to run to the podium.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=CJ+Spiller&iid=7152970″ src=”b/3/b/5/Clemson_v_South_942c.jpg?adImageId=12626937&imageId=7152970″ width=”380″ height=”250″ /]

9. BUFFALO BILLS: CJ SPILLER, RB, CLEMSON

Quick analysis: Goodnight Marshawn Lynch. Spiller is the top back in the draft hands down. Jacksonville folks apparently were salivating over him, proclaiming him to be the next Chris Johnson. Speaking of the Jags, they are up next.

10. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: TYSON ALUALU, DT, CALIFORNIA

Quick analysis: Mike Mayock said this pick was going to be off the reservation since Spiller was gone. I get that but the Jags clearly need help at the defensive line spot. Good for them.

8:40: The first trade of the draft…Niners jump to 11 and Denver will now pick 13.

11. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: ANTHONY DAVIS, OT, RUTGERS

Quick analysis: The Niners saw the chance to jump up and they did it to grab Davis. Now, they need to fix that quarterback problem. Alex Smith can’t do it. He might be able to scratch out eight wins but that will not help anyone.

8:48: Oohhh. Chargers jump to 12 and trade with Miami.

12. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: RYAN MATTHEWS, RB, FRESNO ST.

Quick analysis: Well, well, well. The team lacking a significant runner jumps up to 12 to grab Matthews. That might be a bit of a stretch there but the Chargers need a starting back.

8:52: Good grief.  The Eagles have just made a trade up to 13. They’re going defense here.

13. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: BRANDON GRAHAM, DE, MICHIGAN

Quick analysis: The Eagles reach up for an edge rusher, which they clearly need. One minor concern here. While the front-office personnel has changed over the years, the Eagles brass struggles at finding good defensive linemen (see McDougle, Jerome).

9:03: One thing is for sure. Mike Mayock loves him some Earl Thomas.

9:04: ATTENTION CHARGER FANS: Flipping ones and sending a two and fourth to Miami for a guy who may have been on the board in the 20s was a bit of a risk. Too rich a price for my blood.

14. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: EARL THOMAS, S, TEXAS

Quick analysis: Mike Mayock reaaaaaaaaaaaaallllly likes him.

15. NEW YORK GIANTS: JASON PIERRE-PAUL, DE, SOUTH FLORIDA

Quick analysis: Can we stop hearing the phrase “physically gifted”? Who in this draft isn’t in some way, shape, or form. Anyhow, this guy is an amazing athlete. I hope he challenges Osi Umenyiora to a backflip competition for playing time.

16. TENNESSEE TITANS: DERRICK MORGAN, DE, GEORGIA TECH

Quick analysis: Reportedly, the Titans were eyeing up Pierre-Paul but settle for Morgan at 16. The Titans pass defense was atrocious at times last season and it wasn’t necessarily all bad secondary play. They labored to create pressure. Thus, the arrival of Mr. Morgan.

17. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: MIKE IUPATI, G, IDAHO

Quick analysis: Mike Iu….oh sorry. Time for the Steelers to pick.

18. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: MAURKICE POUNCEY, C, FLORIDA

Quick analysis: The Steelers attempt to improve that offensive line of theirs. Pittsburgh QB #7 has taken a beating over the past few seasons and this might help them quite a bit. They need an anchor for that line and it might be Pouncey.

9:31: A shot of the Falcons war room shows head coach Mike Smith giving a fist pump, which is better than throwing fists.

19. ATLANTA FALCONS: SEAN WEATHERSPOON, LB, MISSOURI

Quick analysis: I feel like I’ve watched the same defense for Atlanta for the last 10 years. It’s wavered between mediocre and poor mostly. Smith will make it a tougher unit though. I trust him.

20. HOUSTON TEXANS: KAREEM JACKSON, CB, ALABAMA

Quick analysis: Sorry Houston. Dez Bryant alert. We’ll get back to you soon.

9:40: BB trades with younger BB. Denver will now pick instead of New England.

21. CINCINNATI BENGALS: JERMAINE GRESHAM, TE, OKLAHOMA

Quick analysis: Interesting pick here. The Bengals evidently did not want to roll the dice on Bryant and opt for a tight end instead. Gresham is a solid pass catcher and the Bengals need a stronger tight end option.

22. DENVER BRONCOS: DEMARYIUS THOMAS, WR, GEORGIA TECH

Quick analysis: Thomas was a big play threat at G-Tech and will help Denver’s offense which is now without Brandon Marshall. So, the Broncos trade down the round and then back up to 22 to grab Thomas. Mayock  says the Broncos have some fur to make this considering Thomas’ recent medical history (broken foot) prevented him from participating in the combine. Well, we know mini-BB is not short on fur.

23. GREEN BAY PACKERS: BRYAN BULAGA, OT, IOWA

Quick analysis: If you want to know why the Packers chose an offensive lineman, click here or watch the video below.

9:55: The dynasty in peril picks next. Tebow alert? I sure hope not.

958: Oh boy. Oh boy. JERRY JONES ALERT!!!! Lord Belichick drops once more.

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Dez+Bryant&iid=3332383″ src=”5/0/1/c/ea.JPG?adImageId=12627410&imageId=3332383″ width=”380″ height=”252″ /]

24. DALLAS COWBOYS: DEZ BRYANT, WR, OKLAHOMA ST.

Quick analysis: A big but good gamble by the Cowboys for a couple reasons. First, this effectively makes Roy Williams a non-entity in my opinion. They don’t have to rely on him at all once Bryant gets rolling. Secondly, this gives Dallas a bevy of offensive options IF they can keep his head on straight. He’s a top 10 talent but comes with baggage.

10:06: Wait a minute…No…it can’t be…are you serious? Really? He’s going to go at 25?

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=Tim+Tebow&iid=7154703″ src=”2/2/5/9/Florida_State_v_5100.jpg?adImageId=12627437&imageId=7154703″ width=”380″ height=”289″ /]

25. DENVER BRONCOS: TIM TEBOW, QB, FLORIDA

Quick analysis: Mel Kiper just said he has value as an H-back in a few years. Hey Mel, if Denver takes him at 25 there is no way they have that plan in place. Tebow went from being a day two pick and jumped all the way up to the 25th pick. Crazy. Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn might want to break out their voodoo dolls.

10:12: Can we get a live shot of Jimmy Clausen in Palm Springs with Erin Andrews again? He might not be seen again the rest of the night. That will teach him to go on television with Jon Gruden again.

26. ARIZONA CARDINALS: DAN WILLIAMS, DT, TENNESSEE

Quick analysis: With the place buzzing over the last two picks, the Cardinals go defensive tackle and pick up a run stuffer.

10:19: The Pats are up for seemingly the 15th time tonight. Another false alarm?

27. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: DEVIN MCCOURTY, CB, RUTGERS

Quick analysis: He ran a 4.38 at the combine and is a skilled kick blocker. The Pats need more team speed and in the secondary in particular. He will be a much welcomed youthful addition to an aging Pats defense. Weird note on him? Just five career interceptions as a corner.

28. MIAMI DOLPHINS: JARED ODRICK, DT, PENN STATE

Quick analysis: This is the San Diego pick and the Dolphins decide to D-line. The AFC East, which looked rather meek entering last season, now appears to be the new grizzly bear division of the AFC.

10:33: Speaking of grizzly bears, it’s time for the Jets to pick.

29. NEW YORK JETS: KYLE WILSON, CB, BOISE STATE

Quick analysis: Someone asked me earlier this week what I thought the Jets would do at 29 and I had them taking a corner but Jackson instead of Wilson. They got flipped here between New York and Houston though. The Jets need a good nickel defensive back. Also, Antonio Cromartie is not a sure thing. At worst, Wilson is a nickel back that will contribute on throwing downs. The Jets had no depth at that spot (that could play anyways) during their AFC title game loss to the Colts. Smart move.

10:43: Memo to Minnesota…do not take Jimmy Clausen. You’re a Super Bowl team. Act like it.

10:44: Minny trades out of the round to Detroit. Jahvid Best in. The Kevin Smith era in Detroit just took a dent.

30. DETROIT LIONS: JAHVID BEST, RB, CALIFORNIA

Quick analysis: Best is a long-distance threat for the Lions, who can also catch the ball out of the backfield. Good job by the Lions considering Kevin Smith blew out his knee late last season. Hopefully, Best is a better decision maker than the last big name back out of Cal.

31. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: JERRY HUGHES, DE, TCU

Quick summary: No Raheem Brock opened up a spot along the defensive front. Hughes is a steady pass rusher that will not be expected to do big things right away with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis on the ends at the moment. Score one for Indy by grabbing some depth.

10:56: Drew Brees time. Brees will announce the Saints pick, which of course is the final pick of the first round and the evening.

32. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: PATRICK ROBINSON, CB, FLORIDA STATE

Quick analysis: Decent run stopper with some questionable tackling ability but he is a respectable cover corner that will give defensive coordinator Gregg Williams the chance to blitz more. Considering most teams will be behind the eight ball with the Saints, the defense is going to see a lot of throws in turn and good corner play will be huge.

11:09: Amazingly, this draft is over in under four hours. A rapid fire first day saw Jimmy Clausen and Sergio Kindle drop out of the first round. Clearly, the three big stories will be Clausen’s fall, Bryant’s arrival to Dallas and of course, Tebow going at 25.

It’s too early to declare winners and losers but the plot thickens tomorrow at 6pm for Day 2 of the draft.

Lastly, even though I have this song on my Ipod, I’ve had enough thanks to the draft. Sorry H.O.V.A.
