The ongoing saga of Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has taken another turn. Haynesworth’s agent Chad Speck told the Washington Post that his client wants out of Washington.
Washington’s mini-camp activities take place this weekend and it sounds as if he will continue his stand against the new regime of Mike Shanahan.
As explained in earlier posts, this situation mostly stems from the idea that the Redskins defense will now employ a 3-4 defensive scheme, which doesn’t allow Albert to shine in his opinion.
Here is an excerpt from a Haynesworth-issued statement on Tuesday night regarding his absence:
The Washington Redskins are a great and storied franchise with an owner in Mr. Snyder that will do anything in his power to win and a fan base that is unrivaled in the NFL. When I signed here after meeting all day with the staff and top executives, and talked about the defense that we would run and what my role would be, I was assured I would have the freedom to play to my strengths and I was excited about the future.
I’m sure no one assumed that the Jim Zorn regime would bomb the way it did but guess what? That’s exactly what happened and the Redskins needed to do something.
Haynesworth’s attention-grabbing ploy to get his way is not endearing him to his teammates either.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, one unnamed teammate referred to him as an “asshole”, while another suggested he was only interested in money and not football.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has his hands full this season. He’s got limited options at wide receiver, running backs all on the downside of their careers, a new quarterback who can’t stop talking about his old team, and a disgruntled defensive tackle that signed one of the biggest contracts in league history last year.
Yep, sounds like 6-10 to me.
