Day 1 of Life Without Chase Utley

These are dangerous times for my beloved Philadelphia Phillies. Word trickled out from Cincinnati on Tuesday that Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will head to the 15-day DL along with third baseman Placido Polanco.

My take on Utley is a bit different I feel. Whenever I think of Utley, I think of Ryan Howard. To me, they are attached at the hip like Siamese twins or perhaps, like the Glimmer Twins.

I liken the combo of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard to that of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

In my opinion, Howard is Mick Jagger (the group’s heavyweight and showman), while Utley serves the role of Keith Richards (clearly the group’s lifeline and the straw that stirs the drink).

Much like the Stones, one without the other just seems weird.

Do you remember the solo work of Keith Richards? Probably not.

How about the solo stylings of Mick Jagger? You might but he had several regrettable performances.

Watching tonight’s Phillies game felt weird because I’m so used to seeing Utley bat third and Howard fourth. Alas, there we will be at least two more weeks without seeing the duo together aiming to crush National League pitching. In other words, Mick was missing Keith.

I don’t like how some of the Phillies fanbase tries to create an Utley vs. Howard schism; it’s not a competition or Kramer vs. Kramer. They are in this together.

Now, one of them is missing. Much like Mick, Ryan Howard will probably still produce but it will not be the same without Keith…err, Chase Utley.
