This is the next installment in a twelve-part examination of the NFL playoffs as we provide brief looks at each team participating in this year’s postseason run.
Andy Reid’s motley crew is under review.
#6 Seed – Philadelphia Eagles
First Round Opponent: Green Bay Packers
Best Case Playoffs Scenario: Combined with Michael Vick’s health, Philly’s offensive team speed overwhelms opposing defenses. Their postseason success will likely be defined by their ability to make big plays (20 yard + plays). Thus, LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin help Vick carry the load by putting up points to support a questionable defense.
Worst Case Playoffs Scenario: Vick’s quadriceps injury does not heal and Kevin Kolb attempts to save the day. Also, Philly’s defense continues its run of disappointing postseason performances under Reid. Their pass defense, which has been secretly brutal this season (ranked 29th in TD passes allowed), cannot hold up under the pressure of facing good quarterbacks.
Eagle Player of Note: Trent Cole. Everyone knows the Eagles can score when the offense is functioning properly but the defense will need to make plays if they want to have any shot of advancing to the Super Bowl. The defensive end has 57 career sacks in the regular season. During five postseason games, Cole is the proud owner of 1.5 sacks. If that trend continues, the Eagles may be in big trouble. Philly’s pass rush must create pressure and Cole is their top bookend rusher.
Notable Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Native: Kelly Monaco of General Hospital and Dancing With The Stars.
Bizarre Note Regarding Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Philly has a rather intriguing lineage musically. Jazz great John Coltrane, Hall and Oates, and the rapper Freeway hail from Philadelphia amongst a host of many other musical acts.
A Reason Why The Eagles Should Be Worried: The Eagles were 1-3 this season versus the NFC North. Their lone win came in a tough 35-32 Week 2 battle versus the Detroit Lions. Just to advance to the NFC title game, the Eagles must beat both the Packers and Bears…two teams that defeated them during the ’10 regular season.
Bad Moment In Eagles Postseason History: I don’t think the Eagles gave away any Super Bowls during the Buddy Ryan era but in retrospect, 1988 was their best opportunity. San Fran won the Super Bowl after a 10-6 regular season. Too bad the Eagles ran into a problem in Chicago during the NFC Divisional playoff round.
