Throwback Thursday: Giants Stonewall Broncos In ’89

During the 1989 season, the Eagles and Giants were going toe to toe in their battle for the NFC East crown.

Week 14 of the ’89 campaign saw the Giants make a trip to snowy Mile High Stadium to visit John Elway’s Denver Broncos.

After Dave Meggett turned a short Phil Simms pass into a 57-yard touchdown catch, New York led 14-0 in the second quarter.

Elway trimmed the lead to 14-7 on a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Michael Young.

With time running out on the Broncos, Elway put together a drive that led Denver down to the New York 1.

Fourth down arrived and so did Giants linebacker Gary Reasons with one of the greatest tackles of all-time.

New York’s defensive stand in the 14-7 win proved critical in the divisional race. Philly swept the Giants during the regular season.

The Giants eventually won the NFC East in ’89 by one game over the Eagles.

  1. That IS football…then. Today, that would probably be a 15 yard penalty for the hit and the Giants would be fined 50K on Tuesday. Great hit. Thank God for memories, for I feel when football returns I may not recognize it…sigh.
