The Bill Walsh/Joe Montana 49ers were not very good when forced to visit the Meadowlands.
Including the playoffs, San Francisco played the Giants four straight years in New Jersey.
After losing two consecutive playoff games by the combined score of 66-6, San Francisco scratched out a win versus New York featuring replacement players in ’87 but for many of their regulars, winning in the Meadowlands was a big void for the 49ers.
Finally, it happened in 1988.
Trailing late in the fourth quarter 17-13, the Niners appeared to have zero chance of driving the field for a go-ahead score against New York’s bruising defense.
Then in one fell swoop, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice went to work.
