The Dallas Cowboys made the right decision to pick tackle Zack Martin in the first round, instead from quarterback Johnny Manziel, a decision that probably was not easy for owner Jerry Jones.
After taking the quarterback of Texas A&M, the Cleveland Browns are listed with 50/1 Odds to win the Super Bowl XLIX, according to SportsBettingDime.com. This year the NFL title match will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
Manziel, who was born in Tyler, Texas, was the Cowboys fans’ favorite. However, he was selected in the 22nd spot by the Browns and the response of fans in the Dogpound was immediate.
The new jersey with the number 2 was put on sale on Thursday night and became the best-selling at NFLShop.com. Fans stood in long lines the day after to purchase one at FirstEnergy Stadium. Even LeBron James of the Miami Heat acquired one.
Nike, who has an endorsement deal with the former player for the Aggies, also put on sale t-shirts that were quickly bought by Browns fans. The shirts who read “Johnny Football” and “My Manziel”, for women, can be bought for 28 and 34 dollars, respectively.
Thanks to the great popularity of Manziel, a fan in Ohio created a beer with the name of the quarterback (Johnny Man’z Ale). Chris Slavin, 33, said it’s not for sale it and it will only be for personal use.
Jerry Jones knew that Manziel would be a magnet to sell more Cowboys’ merchandise and that everything the player did, on and off the field, would have the spotlight of the media, which is one of the favorite things of the Dallas’ owner.
The quarterback had no chance to be a starter in Dallas this season as Tony Romo has a six-year-$108 million contract and is one of Jones’ favorite players.
Of the three quarterbacks taken in the first round in the Draft, Manziel is the one most likely to see the field this season, something that was reflected on the tickets sale for the Browns. Alec Scheiner, President of the team, said that in less than 15 hours after the first day of the Draft 2,300 tickets were sold.
Scheiner said that picking Manziel was a football decision and not business. If the quarterback does not respond to expectations in the field, at least the Browns will be located between the teams with higher sales this season.
