If you’re a young Eagles fan, the performances of Sam Bradford thus far are enough to drive one to start smoking.
Nonetheless, Philly somehow finds itself tied for first place in the NFC East entering Week 7.
Alas, it’s time for our first live blog of the season featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and one of the NFL’s undefeated teams, the 5-0 Carolina Panthers.
FIRST QUARTER
8:27 – Panthers win toss and defer. BRADFORD BALL FIRST.
8:33 – It’s the DeMarco Murray show early. A whole lot of running from the Eagles. When will they unleash the passing game?
8:35 – We get our answer…the Eagles lose five yards on a false start penalty. Then, on a 3rd and 11, Bradford gets sacked. Oof. Cameron Newton makes his first appearance this evening as the Panthers offense takes the field.
(NFL GAME BREAK….WASHINGTON OVERCOMES A 24-0 DEFICIT TO DEFEAT TAMPA BAY. NOW, WE TAKE YOU TO THE REDSKINS LOCKER ROOM)
8:38 – Back to action. Panthers offense hits the field for the first time.
8:40 – Jonathan Stewart hits the Eagles D up for a 36-yard run, which is probably not a good sign.
8:41 – Newton to Philly Brown sets up goal to go. Mike Tolbert blasts in from two yards away and just like that, Carolina is in front. That was waaaaayyy too easy.
PANTHERS 7, EAGLES 0
8:44 – How rare is a Carolina TD to start the first quarter?
8:45 – Welp, that didn’t take long…Bradford interception. Colin Jones intercepts off the deflection from Jordan Matthews. Carolina is deep in Philly territory.
8:47 – Just a play later, Ted Ginn Jr. coughs up the ball and it’s intercepted by Philadelphia. However, that appears to be a bit dubious on replay. Thus, time for a review.
8:50 – Eagles catch a major break and Nolan Carroll is granted an interception. Eagles get it back at their 5.
8:52 – We’ll learn how tough the Eagles are in this one. Panthers are knocking the crap out of them on each play.
9:01 – Bad news for the Eagles. They dig out of their hole but left tackle Jason Peters goes off with an injury and is carted off. The Birds can’t convert a 3rd and 16. Punt time.
9:03 – The Peters injury may cast a pall on the rest of the game.
9:05 – The Eagles secondary is getting gashed by Newton on each passing play. Reminiscent of a young Terry Bradshaw. He either throws incomplete or for at least 20 yards.
9:06 – Newton misses a wide-open TGJ for a first down that would have been a big gainer. Time for a punt.
9:10 – As the first quarter ends, Eagles trying to put something together and they need to quickly. They were thoroughly outplayed during the first quarter.
END OF 1: PANTHERS 7, EAGLES 0
NOW, A WORD FROM OUR COMMERCIAL SPONSORS…
SECOND QUARTER
9:16 – How scary is it that the Eagles’ most reliable receiver might be Miles Austin? That’s simply terrifying. Anyhow, Bradford tries to run for a first on 3rd and 3. He comes up short near the 50.
9:18 – Bradford rolls out to get the first down on a 4th and 1. Drives rolls on.
9:21 – I’m not a Bradford guy but he hits Matthews in the hands…and he drops it again. Matthews has been brutal.
9:22 – Congratulations to Jordan Matthews for replacing Roberto Duran and Ron Garvin as the official new Hands of Stone.
9:26 – Carolina can’t do anything with their next possession. Three and out…
9:32 – The Eagles move into Carolina territory. However, they can’t make anything out of a 3rd and 4 and a Caleb Sturgis FG try is on tap.
9:36 – Sturgis knocks through a 52-yard field goal and bails out the drive.
PANTHERS 7, EAGLES 3
9:37 – Of course, Sturgis giveth and then taketh away by kicking the ball out of bounds on the kickoff.
9:39 – Nifty trick play by the Panthers. Newton acts like he’s running then flips TGJ on a reverse. 44 yards to the PHI 8. Carolina though wants to honor great Eagles teams of the past during the Andy Reid era by burning all of their timeouts with five minutes left before halftime.
9:45 – A pair of offsides penalties setup a Cam Newton TD run. Eagles down by 11 but feels like 27.
PANTHERS 14, EAGLES 3.
9:48 – Shortly before the score, Newton gave us a lesson in flopping. Luckily, the officials didn’t bite.
9:49 – Eagles don’t convert on another third down. Carolina will get the ball back with about two minutes left before halftime.
9:52 – By the way, how is this guy a millionaire?
9:54 – The Eagles can’t check TGJ for some reason.
10:00 – Oh boy. Cam Newton makes his first major mistake of the game. He opts to squeeze a pass in along the sideline and it gets picked on a great diving stab by Malcolm Jenkins. Under a minutes left…
10:01 – Eagles inside of the CAR 10! Seems like the Eagles have to work way too hard to do anything in this one.
10:04 – Jordan Matthews makes a catch for once…but he’s out of bounds. Then, Josh Norman swats away a potential TD pass from Bradford to Ertz.
10:07 – Sturgis FG is good to salvage drive for the Eagles.
HALFTIME: PANTHERS 14, EAGLES 6
THIRD QUARTER
10:23 – Carolina starts the second half with the football and TGJ is a hybrid between Jerry Rice and Randy Moss in their prime tonight.
10:24 – Carolina with a goal to go in Eagles territory…
10:28 – Mike Tolbert breaks three tackles on a pass to score a touchdown. Terrible tackling. AWFUL. Panthers go 80 yards on the second half’s opening drive.
PANTHERS 21, EAGLES 6
10:34 – After watching Carolina tonight, they can play with Green Bay, right?
10:35 – Nevermind. Right as I type that, Ryan Mathews goes 63 yards for a touchdown. Wow. Forget I ever typed that Green Bay thing. Stricken it from the record.
PANTHERS 21, EAGLES 13
10:40 – CAM, OHHHH, CAM….throws an interception to Byron Maxwell. The Eagles are in business inside the CAR 20.
10:46 – The Eagles are cursed by their inadequate wide receivers again. Josh Huff can’t come up with a catch in the end zone. Caleb Sturgis is up.
PANTHERS 21, EAGLES 16
10:52 – When Carolina runs straight ahead, it just looks like a massive rugby scrum. Panthers in Eagles’ territory.
10:55 – Holding penalty thwarts a Panthers drive in Philly territory. PUNT.
10:59 – SAM BRADFORD LOOKS LIKE A PROFESSIONAL QUARTERBACK. STOP THE PRESSES.
END OF 3: PANTHERS 21, EAGLES 16
FOURTH QUARTER
11:01 – Are the Eagles receivers that awful that Miles Austin just shows up months ago and gets more open than Riley Cooper, Josh Huff, and Jordan Matthews?
11:02 – Eagles in Carolina territory again…Philly’s offensive line is starting to block up effectively on the run. Hmm…maybe Chip Kelly fed them those sports science smoothies at halftime?
11:05 – Eagles dial up a dumb wide receiver screen on 3rd and 9. Come on guys. Terrible call. Sturgis is on for another field goal from 50 plus. Birds waste a timeout, don’t get a first down, and miss a 50-yarder. Terrible sequence. May cost them the game.
11:12 – Carolina is soooooooooo going to take advantage of Chip Kelly leaving the game to consider that coaching job at USC.
11:14 – A Gano field goal extends the lead for the Panthers after they quickly move into Eagles territory.
PANTHERS 24, EAGLES 16
11:18 – The Eagles seem pretty committed to running their way back into contention here. Oh wait, Sam Bradford gets sack. Wonderful. I am angry.
11:20 – Bradford misses Austin on a 3rd and 15 throw. PUNT. Seven minutes left to dance. Eagles are running out of chances.
11:23 – Just seems like Chip Kelly teams really labor playing against physical teams.
11:24 – Piping hot take out of the oven from Eagles beat writer Les Bowen.
11:27 – Riverboat Ron does Chip Kelly a solid by dialing up the first carry of the night for Cameron Artis-Payne on a critical 3rd and 2. Woops. They come up a yard short near midfield. Eagles will have one last crack with just over three minutes remaining and one timeout at their disposal.
11:30 – THIS:
My feelings exactly.
11:31 – Bradford gets sacked back at the PHI 5 on the first play. Swing pass is behind Sproles on second down.
11:32 – Bradford’s arm gets hit on 3rd and 16….but there is a PI flag thrown, which immediately gets picked up because the pass was tipped…but only it wasn’t.
11:33 – The Genius throws his challenge flag to make the PI penalty stick. That should work out for him.
11:36 – Eagles win the challenge…and Bradford gets sacked again on first down. Ertz drops a pass on 3rd and 9. Meanwhile, a word on Bradford’s mobility and awareness.
11:40 – Miles Austin drops a 4th and 9 pass. That’s not Bradford’s fault. His receivers do stink. Carolina ball deep in Philly territory with about two minutes left.
11:45 – Carolina gambles by kicking a field goal, which is ridiculous because the Eagles could block and return that mess. Don’t worry though, Eagles aren’t that lucky.
PANTHERS 27, EAGLES 16
11:49 – The Eagles have been extinguished for the evening.
FINAL: PANTHERS 27, EAGLES 16
SUMMARY: A pretty disappointing effort from the Eagles. They show you a little hope and then snatch it away from you because, you know, E-A-G-L-E-S. They are still in the thick of the NFC East race despite a repugnant 3-4 mark. Carolina moves to 6-0. We have to take them seriously. Although, they can’t hang with Green Bay playing offense like that.
We bid you adieu with a tribute to Sam Bradford.
Until next Sunday night, boys and girls.
