Week 3 was chock full of news. The Dolphins scored 70 points (!!!!) against the lowly Denver Broncos; the Dallas Cowboys may have proved they aren’t a Super Bowl team without the injured Trevon Diggs; and the C.J. Stroud led an upset victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars…but the world’s biggest music star stole the show in Kansas City.

THE NICKEL PACKAGE: FIVE QUICK HITTERS FROM SUNDAY:

1. It’s Taylor Swift’s world and we are just living in it: The Chicago Bears stunk up the joint again in a 41-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Thankfully for the Bears, pop megastar Taylor Swift decided to support her friend/boyfriend/companion/fan Travis Kelce in-person at Arrowhead Stadium. Of course, Patrick Mahomes made sure to get his BFF a touchdown in the blowout victory, which prompted Swift to exclaim LFG after the score as she was seated next to Kelce’s mom.

Oh yeah, totally obscured by the Swift spectacle – Mahomes injured his ankle.

2. The Dolphins are the best team in football right now, period: The Miami Dolphins dismantled the Denver Broncos on Sunday, 70-20. The last time an NFL team scored 70 points was 1966 when the Washington Commanders crushed the New York Giants, 72-41. Also, the Dolphins were just three points away from tying the single-game scoring record set back in 1940 when the Bears scored 73 in the NFL title game. Yesterday, Miami decimated Denver by piling up over 700 yards of total offense. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 309 yards and four scores. Meanwhile, rookie running back Devon Achane ran for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Then, there’s Tyreek Hill, who caught nine passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. In my humble opinion, Hill is the frontrunner for MVP. It’s going to be nearly impossible for a wide receiver to win MVP but he’s the most important player on the best team. We’ve got a ways to go but the Dolphins look like the real deal.

3. The Dallas Cowboys might be in trouble: As great as the Cowboys were in the first two weeks, their good fortune disappeared quickly thanks to a torn ACL suffered by cornerback Trevon Diggs during practice; and a rough loss to the previously winless Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Cowboys offense couldn’t convert in the red zone (they finished 1 of 5) and three key injuries along the offensive line combined to sink the ‘Pokes. Their upcoming schedule includes the Patriots, Chargers, Rams, 49ers, and Eagles. Not any layups in that group. Meanwhile, the defense allowed 7.5 yards per play to the Cardinals, which is the most allowed by the Cowboys in a game in six seasons.

4. The AFC South might be up for grabs: The Jaguars were the uncrowned AFC South champions heading into the season after reaching playoffs a year ago. However, Jacksonville put together an underwhelming offensive effort against Kansas City in Week 2. Then, CJ Stroud led the Texans to a road upset win over Jacksonville on Sunday. Gardner Minshew spelled the injured Anthony Richardson and helped the Colts stun the previously unbeaten Baltimore Ravens.

5. Zach Wilson’s time is up. Someone else’s time is now: There’s a sea of castoffs on the waiver wire for the Jets to bring but the question is will they pull the trigger soon after another listless offensive performance against the Patriots yesterday? Among the more damning plays of the Zach Wilson era took place yesterday in the game’s biggest play. Facing a 4th and 10 from their 45 after three straight incomplete passes, Wilson threw a two-yard pass to tight end Tyler Conklin that went nowhere. Game over…and for the Jets, the season could be over.

THE GREATEST KICK RETURN IN NFL HISTORY: Texans fullback Andrew Beck took a kickoff 85 yards to the house after seven Jaguars had a chance to tackle him. Beck isn’t an offensive or defensive linemen but this still counts as a big boy touchdown. It was awkward, it was shocking, it was football.

THE ANALYTICS SUPER BOWL GOES AWRY: I’m sorry but Chargers head coach Brandon Staley and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell put on one of the more absurd coaching displays in recent memory during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Vikings/Chargers tilt. Leading 28-24 with 1:51 remaining, Staley opted to go for it from his own 24 yardline on 4th and 1. ESPN’s Seth Walder said the correct call was to go for it with the Chargers having an 88% chance of winning if they converted.

Sorry, but this was silly. A defense filled with multimillionaires can’t get a stop if the Vikings have to drive the ball potentially 65 yards to win? Luckily for the Chargers, Kirk Cousins threw an interception to seal it…but Chargers fans, I don’t know how you do it.

NEXT WEEK’S MAIN EVENT: The Dolphins will not score 70 points in Buffalo next week but the two teams get together after a playing in three close, spirited games during the 2022 season. The Bills are coming off of their best performance of the season defensively after crushing Washington 37-7 on Sunday. By the way, last season’s first Bills/Dolphins meeting gave us one of the best football moments in a bit from Buffalo offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.

Sunday should be a hoot.
