Since Brett Favre’s retirement, John Madden has been looking to jump on a new bandwagon and it appears he has found it.
During his talk show on SiriusXM radio, Madden heaped immense praise onto Robert Griffin III after his sensational debut in a 40-32 Redskins victory over the Saints at the Superdome last Sunday:
“And at some point, I have to admit that I said this, it just came out, I said ‘RG3’s the best player in the NFL today.'”
Wait, what?
“That’s what I really thought. Those words did come out. Now, I don’t know that I’m gonna live with that or back that up the rest of the season.”
John, that’s crazy talk. Any football fan with any common sense knows who is the best player in the NFL.
Nonetheless, I’ll let him slide for that. His next RG3-centric comment proved to be telling and most importantly, his most accurate statement:
“You know, the thing that he did that was so amazing was he reminded me — and I don’t mean to throw names around — but he reminded me of a Tim Tebow that can pass,” Madden said, obviously. “You know, Tim Tebow, when he was playing for Denver last year, he would tend to freeze the defenses, because they weren’t sure if it was run or pass, if he was gonna hand off or run. I mean, he couldn’t pass like RGIII — [Griffin] can throw the ball — but he has a tendency to freeze the defense.”
If you haven’t done so yet, plunk down some cash on NFL Game Rewind and watch the Redskins/Saints game.
You’ll see exactly what Madden is talking about. RG3 doesn’t labor to complete passes like Tebow. Everything flows nice and easy out of that offense.
Sorry Tim. You’re so 2011.
