Ever heard of the Redskins Rule before?
If not, here’s the deal.
Since 1937, the Redskins have played before 18 Presidential elections. In 17 of those 18 occasions, Washington’s game result dictated the outcome of the election.
If the Redskins win, then the incumbent wins. In this case, that would be Barack Obama.
When Washington loses, it means the challenging party earns the nod. The Republicans will send Mitt Romney to do their bidding on Tuesday.
Washington’s 21-13 loss to Carolina on Sunday means that Romney will win Tuesday’s election if the rule holds.
The only time the rule failed to hold was in the 2004 election. The incumbent, George W. Bush, knocked off the Democratic challenger, John Kerry. Days earlier, Washington lost to the Brett Favre-led Green Bay Packers, 28-14.
As a result of Washington’s loss, history says Barack Obama will be a one-term President.
At least Romney has mingled with Obama supporter Robert Kraft before so he at least has that going for him.
Ultimately, the Redskins Rule is sheer coincidence of course.
After all, back in 1984, Ronald Reagan was going to demolish the Mondale/Ferraro ticket even if the Redskins lost to the Atlanta Falcons 65-0 one night earlier.
