Missouri Tigers defensive end Michael Sam, who is set to enter May’s NFL Draft, told ESPN and the New York Times on Sunday that he is gay.
Upon Sam’s arrival in the NFL, he will become the first openly gay NFL player.
The NFL (led by Greg Aiello), which often reeks of being a secret society whether it be through injury reports or game-planning, didn’t waste time sending a somewhat vague message of support regarding Sam’s declaration.
Off the heels of the Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito debacle, locker room culture will take center stage upon Sam’s arrival into the league.
But good for Sam. It takes courage took the be first at something. We’ll get a great look into how NFL players receive him pretty quickly.
