Cam Newton Has Fractured Rib; Taming Of Panthers Well Underway

The Carolina Panthers diagnosed quarterback Cam Newton with a hairline rib fracture in the days following the team’s 30-7 drubbing at the hands of the New England Patriots.

Newton left Friday’s preseason game against the Patriots soon after New England linebacker Jamie Collins stepped on the Auburn Tiger’s back.

However, after X-rays turned up negative, Newton appeared at the Panthers’ facility feeling soreness; and another test revealed the fracture.

The team announced that while Newton will not play in team’s preseason finale, the injury should not prevent him from starting in Week 1 against Tampa Bay.

Carolina finished 12-4 a season ago but with plenty of personnel changes to the Panthers offense, Newton already had his work cut out for him.

A rib injury can only further complicate matters for a team that will struggle to return to the postseason in 2014.
