Television sports play-by-play man and personality Brent Musburger will announce the final game of a legendary career next Tuesday night.
The 77-year-old Musburger will hang up his microphone after next Tuesday night’s college basketball contest between Georgia and Kentucky.
While Musburger is moving onto a family business involving sports handicapping, he will not be forgotten.
Even though his famous CBS run from 1977 to 1990 ended roughly 27 years ago, the story of Musburger’s career can’t be told without mentioning his work as host of The NFL Today.
“You are looking live” became a signature line for Musburger as he ushered in NFL action on Sundays alongside several NFL Today stars including Irv Cross, Phyllis George, and Jimmy The Greek.
Musburger’s retirement is a stark reminder how much the landscape of NFL pregame shows has changed over the last 25 years.
Today’s outfits seem disposable and lacking personality. The ones that have some shred of personality go too far off the reservation to develop a relationship with the audience.
I don’t want to sound like Clint Eastwood’s character from “Gran Torino” where I’m “get off my lawn.” However, it’s just not the same anymore.
Musburger was a tremendous asset to the sports broadcasting industry. He will definitely be missed.
