Baltimore Ravens

Live Blog – Chiefs At Ravens: Top Guns

The AFC Championship Game that should have been last January (but you know, that whole Tennessee Titans thing) arrives to Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season in Baltimore.

It’s Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in to take on the defending NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Time to bust out the live blog.

FIRST QUARTER

8:15 – And we’re off…the Ravens get the ball first and promptly mosey down the field keyed by a 30-yard run by Jackson…

8:22 – Kansas City doesn’t look super excited about stopping Baltimore’s running game. Red zone time for the Ravens.

8:23 – On cue, the Ravens start throwing the ball, which leads to their demise on the drive. A pass to Willie Snead comes up short of the first down. Justin Tucker does the rest for the Ravens with a short field goal.

RAVENS 3, CHIEFS 0

8:26 – Most importantly, the Ravens took nearly six minutes off the clock on the scoring drive. Time for the Chiefs offense.

8:30 – Boy, I hope you had the over. Just blinked my eyes and the Chiefs are at the Ravens 3 thanks to a couple of big plays by Tyreek Hill.

8:31 – The Ravens D looks terrible on the first drive but that isn’t saying much. The Chiefs do that to a lot of people. A three-yard TD run by Mahomes finishes off the drive.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker misses a PAT?!??!? Odd after he put on a kicking displaying that hasn’t been since the days of Pele.

CHIEFS 6, RAVENS 3

8:37: A first down run by Jackson to open the next drive is foiled by a tripping penalty, which causes Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to blow a gasket. I still think the formula to beating the Ravens is making them throw…and that’s not because of Lamar.

I believe Baltimore’s skill guys are suspect…highly suspect. Punt time for Baltimore.

8:40: Hey, I know Butker and Tucker are great kickers but were they ever asked to attempt (and badly miss) a 76-yard field goal???

8:44 – The Ravens always seem like they need a couple of quarters to figure out the Chiefs….Another Kansas City drive is rolling right into Ravens territory.

8:50 – The first quarter comes to a close looking like what we saw last season between these two teams…the Ravens getting pushed around by Kansas City.

SECOND QUARTER

8:55 – Mahomes throws a short underhanded pass to fullback Anthony Sherman, who no one on Baltimore is paying attention to for the touchdown. Classic Mahomes. The Chiefs are automatic in the red zone.

CHIEFS 13, RAVENS 3

8:56 – If you took the under for this game, you should be fined heavily by your local government. Devin Duvernay takes it 93 yards TO THE HOUSE. Take that KC.

CHIEFS 13, RAVENS 10

9:05 – Ravens force a punt. A defensive stand? What is this defense in the NFL that you speak of?

9:11 – Not to be outdone, the Ravens offense goes in and out quickly as well.

9:16 – Chiefs say enough of this defense stuff and barrel down the field behind a big pass to Travis Kelce into Ravens territory. They are approaching the red zone, yet again.

9:18 – Mahomes finishes off the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill. It’s all Kansas City right now. Mahomes is on fire.

9:28 – The Ravens are fitting to get blown out here, aren’t they?

9:34 – It’s 3rd and 14 near midfield. What does Mahomes do? Goes up top to Mecole Hardman for a bomb to add to the lead. Nighty night.

CHIEFS 27, RAVENS 10

9:38 – The Ravens get near midfield and Jackson gets stripped by the Chiefs D. KC recovers. The Chiefs have another chance to score before halftime with just :30 seconds left.

9:43 – Butker.EXE is malfunctioning. He misses a 42-yard field goal near the end of a Pro-Chiefs first half.

HALFTIME: CHIEFS 27, RAVENS 10

9:59 – Before the start of second half action, a quick word from Mama Mahomes:

THIRD QUARTER:

10:01 – The Chiefs’ air raid on the Ravens continues as Clyde Edwards-Helaire eats up their secondary on a long throw from Patrick Mahomes.

10:03 – The good times don’t last though. Darwin Thompson fumbles near the red zone and the Ravens recover. Finally, a break for the Ravens.

10:15 – A long drive by the Ravens pulls into Chiefs territory but a false start on a 4th and 3 near the Kansas City 20 spells doom for the Ravens. They have to settle for another Justin Tucker field goal.

CHIEFS 27, RAVENS 13

10:23 – Once again, the Chiefs get a little too cute and try a fullback dive at midfield on 4th and 1 and come up inches short. Ravens ball and a golden opportunity to get back into this game.

10:30 – Gus Edwards takes a handoff inside of the Kansas City 10 with the end of the third quarter lurking as somehow, the Ravens are miraculously alive in this game.

FOURTH QUARTER

10:32 – Jackson to Nick Boyle for six….and just like that we have a ballgame.

CHIEFS 27, RAVENS 20

10:42 – I don’t really understand what Baltimore’s game plan was tonight. Blitzing isn’t working. Actually nothing is really working.

10:47 – Patrick Mahomes completes his fourth touchdown pass of the night to….OFFENSIVE LINEMAN ERIC FISHER. BALLGAME (I think).

CHIEFS 34, RAVENS 20

10:52 – Dude, Lamar Jackson has 62 yards passing tonight.

10:55 – The Chiefs prevent the Ravens from denting the end zone once again as fourth down toss in Chiefs territory fails. The biggest drama left in this game is I know someone who bet the over. The total was 54.5.

11:14 – The Chiefs run out the clock essentially and finish off the Ravens in a game that didn’t quite live up to expectations largely thanks to Kansas City’s defense playing fun police against Lamar Jackson and company.

FINAL: CHIEFS 34, RAVENS 20

SUMMARY: When Patrick Mahomes is throwing touchdown passes to offensive linemen, what chance do you really have? The good news for Baltimore is that they could luck out and miss the Chiefs in the playoffs. Otherwise, this will likely happen again in January.
