Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was arrested early Sunday morning in Mobile, Alabama for suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to FOX10 in Mobile, Fairley’s violations also included having an open container, having no proof of insurance, reckless driving, and attempting to evade the police.

After reaching the playoffs last season, Detroit is not exactly having a banner off-season.

Fairley was busted for marijuana possession last month; head coach Jim Schwartz recently banned Titus Young from OTAs after he reportedly punched teammate Louis Delmas; and N’damukong Suh, followed up his December car crash in Portland with a speeding ticket last March.

Detroit’s off-field issues are symbolic of their on-field discipline problems. Last season, when the Lions weren’t maiming opposing players or drawing unnecessary unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, they were a rather entertaining watch.

However, Schwartz’s histrionics seem to leak into the on-field product with his players.

It is rather evident that many teams take on the personality of their head coach and it appears that Detroit is in step with that notion.

Fairley’s latest brush with the law is the latest reminder that something needs to change in the water in Motown.

For the Lions to take the next step to becoming a Super Bowl contender, something needs to dramatically change with their behavior.

Otherwise, all of their talent will be a rather collective waste.
