Thursday NFL Preseason Roundup: Brady, Brees, And A Guy Named Foles

This picture of Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Gisele looks like one of those default pictures wedged into a frame at a crafts shop. Oh, six NFL preseason games took place on Thursday…

PATRIOTS 7, SAINTS 6:

THE SKINNY: The New Orleans/New England Peace Festival is over. Two days of scrimmaging against each other culminated in last night’s one-point win for the Patriots.

dNOTABLES: Patriots left tackle Nate Solder did not have a good night…Tom Brady nearly got killed by Saints defensive end Will Smith…Bill Belichick used verbal ether on the performance of replacement officials…New England first-round pick Chandler Jones received solid reviews…Through two preseason games, Saints defensive line is running through offensive lines like they are the Steel Curtain…Probably not reality but they look good.

EAGLES 24, STEELERS 23:

THE SKINNY: Surprise, surprise…Michael Vick is injured again. X-rays on his injured hand were negative. The 2011 Eagles defense appeared during the first half; complete with shoddy tackling and defensive miscommunication. Typical Steelers first-team offense performance. Their offensive line was used a turnstile but Big Ben made plays. Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles stole the show with a pair of touchdown passes.

NOTABLES: The Eagles had a moment silence for Garrett Reid prior to the game…Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s hit on Byron Leftwich already wins the “Worst Play of the Preseason” award. He’ll be hearing from the league office. Based on his offensive line’s play, Ben will need to wear full body armor by Week 3. Isaac Redman, Rashard Mendenhall’s replacement, carried five times for 14 yards. Foles finished 6 of 10 for 144 yards with two touchdown passes. Trent Edwards filled in nicely as well for the Eagles with 12 of 20 passing for 106 yards and a touchdown…Meanwhile, Mike Kafka was not so good.

REDSKINS 7, BILLS 6:

THE SKINNY: RGIII looked solid in his pro debut. He threw a touchdown pass and finished 4 of 6 for 70 yards. Pierre Garçon ran around the field like he was playing against Otterbein. Vince Young is still doing Vince Young things. The Bills had 14 penalties for 134 yards.

NOTABLES: Washington’s running battle is in favor of Evan Royster. Although, fumbling doesn’t help…Not much to write home about for Buffalo. No time to rush to judgment. However, I feel completely confident stating that Rex Grossman is still ordinary.

BRONCOS 31, BEARS 3:

THE SKINNY: Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton, Peyton.

NOTABLES: Peyton Manning (4-7, 44 yards) nearly engineered a scoring drive in his return to NFL action but instead it ended with an interception by Chicago’s Major Wright. Considering he had not played since January 2011, not a bad first effort…No Cutler, Peppers, Urlacher or Forte for Chicago…By the way, what kind of name is Camden Jack Cutler?

RAVENS 31, FALCONS 17:

THE SKINNY: Curtis Painter is back! He fired three touchdown strikes to lead Baltimore to victory. It would make my NFL season if Painter became embroiled in a quarterback controversy with Joe Flacco. Such an unrealistic and truly enjoyable event will never happen. In other news, get ready for all your buddies to freak out over Julio Jones at fantasy drafts.

NOTABLES: Joe Flacco looked goo….ahhh, I can’t say it yet…Matt Ryan did not put anyone to sleep. He actually moved the ball down field and threw for 155 yards…Attention Michael Turner owners. Hopefully, you do not hear the phrase “Jacquizz Rodgers goes in for the touchdown” too many times from inside the 10.

CHARGERS 21, PACKERS 13:

THE SKINNY: This game featured the NFL’s first-ever female referee, Shannon Eastin. San Diego running back Ryan Mathews broke his clavicle and is out four to six weeks. Green Bay was sloppy and committed four turnovers. Perhaps, Clay Matthews was still trying to figure out how the Giants defeated Green Bay during the playoffs.

NOTABLES: Antonio Gates appears to be healthy…for now…Greg Jennings was out with a concussion…Green Bay’s starting inside linebacker Desmond Bishop left the game with a knee injury.
