Live Game Blog – Broncos At Patriots: XIV Is The Magic Number

ManningBradyNBC

In case you’re not aware, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are really good at football.

Unsure about that for some reason?

Just ask NBC.

Alas, it’s time for the 14th installment of Brady vs. Manning as the Broncos roll into Foxborough. Also, it’s the first installment of “Wes Welker vs. The Patriots.”

The ex-Patriot heads into Gillette Stadium for the first time as a Bronco after he was replaced by Danny Amendola.

Regardless of what anyone thinks about Brady or Manning, this is probably going to end terribly for one of these two defenses.

Let’s go get it…

FIRST QUARTER

8:26 – It’s cold. Peyton Manning looks like he’d rather be stuck on a golf course in Tennessee. Oh by the way, I should remind you right now this game might be a preview of what playing conditions will resemble for the New York-New Jersey Super Bowl.

8:31 – Toss won by Team Brady. They defer and will take the second half kickoff. The Lord Sith is up first.

8:33 – Three and out forced by the Patriots defense as Wes Welker makes a third down catch but is stopped short…

8:36 – Brady and the Pats head out on offense…

8:40 – Goodnight Stevan Ridley…he fumbles and it is promptly returned 60 yards for a score by Von “I added on 16 pounds during my suspension” Miller.

SCORE: BRONCOS 7, PATRIOTS 0

8:42 – There’s a better chance Ridley appears in Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Witness Protection” before he appears for New England on this next drive.

8:47 – Nate Solder throws an invisible block on Miller, who blows him to strip sack Brady. It’s the second turnover of the night for the Patriots.

8:48 – Two plays later…Knowshon Moreno barrels in for a score.

SCORE: BRONCOS 14, PATRIOTS 0

8:55 – If you guessed that New England would turn it over a third time in as many possessions…you’d be correct. This time, LeGarrette Blount fumbles. Hmm…looks vaguely familiar.

ridley8:5 7 – In all fairness to Blount, he got BLASTED. Earlier, Ridley did not.

9:04 – Manning took a sack on second down, which ruins a goal to go situation for the Broncos. They gladly tack on three points.

SCORE: BRONCOS 17, PATRIOTS 0

9:09 – Apparently all of the game-related clocks in Gillette are broken…just like the Pats running backs.

9:13 – I think the first quarter is still going on because the TV clock doesn’t work either. Oh, the Pats punt around midfield.

END OF FIRST: BRONCOS 17, PATRIOTS 0

SECOND QUARTER

9:19 – The Patriots DEFINITELY MISS Vince Wilfork.

9:29 – Pats go for it on fourth down in Denver territory…and come up short on a Brady incomplete pass.

9:37 – You know how you know it’s not New England’s night? Peyton gets a first down on a 3rd and 20 screen play to Montee Ball. Disgusting for a Belichick defense.

9:41 – Long time Manning lacky Jacob Tamme scores to add to New England’s misery. This is like a bad game of Madden for the Pats.

SCORE: BRONCOS 24, PATRIOTS 0

9:47 – A quick word from Twitter on New England’s performance:

10:00 – A non-Patriots like first half. Not a lot to your hat on as a Patriots fan in the first 30 minutes of football. They get the second half kickoff, so there is that…

A dreadfully disappointing half for the Patriots considering Manning has 61 yards passing.

10:02 – Trindon Holliday muffs a punt towards the end of the first half. Pats ball with seconds left but a failed hail mary ends the half.

END OF FIRST HALF: BRONCOS 24, PATRIOTS 0

THIRD QUARTER

10:21 – The second half begins with the Patriots moving into Denver territory. Shane Vereen missed on a wheel route earlier but Gronkowski gets it right the second time around to setup the Pats in the red zone.

10:23 – Finally…signs of life from New England. Brady to Edelman over Quentin Jammer. Pats move 80 yards in eight plays.

SCORE: BRONCOS 24, PATRIOTS 7

10:31 – The fumbles become transferrable. Ball coughs up it up in Denver territory…Patriots on the stroll again.

10:33 – Remember when Stevan Ridley was a Patriot?

10:35 – Brandon Bolden goes in from a yard out. Denver’s lead is down to 10.

SCORE: BRONCOS 24, PATRIOTS 14

10:37 – Quick, someone wake up G.

GiseleB10:44 – Peyton drops the football on 3rd and 5 near midfield shortly after a Wes Welker sighting. Denver is forced to punt.

By the way, if you’re Welker, how frustrating is it that there is a 20 mile per hour wind and you have three catches for 26 yards?

10:48 – NBC returns from break with a few dance spots of Brady and Manning on SNL. Those are fine and dandy but this offering by Peyton is tops…

10:50 – Brady to Edelman sets up the Pats inside of Denver’s 20. Here we go on that roller coaster folks.

10:52 – GRONK ALERT. Football is a crazy game, y’all.

SCORE: BRONCOS 24, PATRIOTS 21

FOURTH QUARTER

10:59 – Logan Ryan intercepts Manning in Denver territory. I guess this is a forerunner of what would have happened if New England didn’t play hot potato with the football during the first quarter.

11:01 – New England quickly gains the lead on a TD toss from Brady to Edelman. Meanwhile, Denver’s defense is dropping like flies. Your move 18.

SCORE: PATRIOTS 28, BRONCOS 24

11:03 – Back to Ryan for a second. Good thing he didn’t do this after the Manning interception. He’d be looking at a lifetime banishment.

LoganRyan

11:04 – Peyton Manning is 50-0 when having a lead of 22 points or more.

11:07 – Broncos try to run their way out of trouble but to no avail. The Pats sniff out the Demaryius Thomas screen play and force another punt.

11:10 – Good punt return by Little Welker (Edelman) clears the way for another potential Pats scoring drive.

11:15 – Brady is torching Denver in the second half…

11:16 – Brady just misses Edelman in the end zone, which would have probably put Denver on life support. Instead, a Gostkowski field goal.

SCORE: PATRIOTS 31, BRONCOS 24

11:22 – Aqib Talib intercepts Manning..but is called for holding (weak).

11:23 – About six minutes left…maybe the drive of the game for Denver.

11:25 – Wow. Wes Welker drops a pass.

Collinsworth – “Wes Welker drops a pass. How many times do you see that?”

Here you go Cris:

WelkerSBDropYep.

11:31 – Manning wistfully moves the Broncos down field including converting a couple of critical third downs…and receiving some assistance from the Pats on a pass interference call inside the Pats 20. Thomas scores on nice throw by Peyton.

SCORE: BRONCOS 31, PATRIOTS 31

11:35 – Just over three minutes left…

11:40 – Denver defense holds finally six drives into the second half. You know the drill here.

11:43 – Thought for sure the Patriots were going to cough it up defensively…Brady gets the ball back with about 28 seconds left.

11:46 – New England does the smart thing and opts to play it safe. Overtime it is…

END OF FOURTH: BRONCOS 31, PATRIOTS 31

OVERTIME

11:51 – Belichick is the balls of football. Takes the wind…and not the ball. Says Peyton, go ahead and score a touchdown, I dare you.

12:03 – The Broncos give it over to the Pats, who throw a bomb on 3rd and 4. Incomplete. Punt back to Peyton.

12:06 – Denver may feel the impact of this game for a few weeks physically.

12:07 – This next throw has to be to Thomas with Talib out.

12:11 – Just a brutal drop by Welker on a 3rd and 8 near the NE 40. Broncos take a delay of game and are forced to punt with about five minutes left.

12:17 – It appears we’re headed for our second tie game of the night…until Tony Carter accidentally touches a punt heading towards Wes Welker. NE ball inside of the Denver 20.

12:19 – Mother Nature was a bitch tonight. Sorry Denver.

12:19 – Jack Del Rio puts backup quarterback Brock Osweiler into the game because he’s 6-8.

Oh, don’t do this Denver:

PatsJets12:21 – The Patriots have second thoughts and decide to put Brady out there to run an extra play or so to kill time. Smart move.

12:23 – Sorry Peyton. Billy Cundiff isn’t wearing a Patriots jersey. Gostkowski boots it through the uprights.

FINAL: PATRIOTS 34, BRONCOS 31

SUMMARY: Denver blows a 24-point lead on the road. Brutal loss and they got physically dismantled through injuries. It’ll be interesting to see the ramifications for the Broncos defense out of this because the blood is on their hands for this one.

They’ll win the AFC West in all likelihood but this game gives you pause about them winning a Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, for the Patriots, this might give them an extra nudge towards a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs.

Lastly, good for the Patriots. This gif couldn’t go to waste…

BradyGronkNight y’all.
