Barstool Sports impresario David Portnoy announced this week that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have a special surprise waiting for him when he makes his long-awaited return to Gillette Stadium next month.
Portnoy tweeted that Barstool will be giving out 30,000 towels to Patriots fans prior to New England’s home opener against Kansas City on September 7.
The game will mark the first appearance for Goodell at Gillette Stadium since January 2015. He has not appeared in the stadium since the controversial Deflategate drama that ultimately led to Tom Brady’s four-game suspension.
Previously, the Goodell clown image was sold as a t-shirt two years ago. However, it returned to the national spotlight in February. Following New England’s dramatic Super Bowl win over the Atlanta Falcons, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was seen wearing the shirt as the team returned to Boston.
Reportedly, Goodell’s feelings were hurt. Apparently, being booed in front of millions of people was easier.
If he didn’t like Patricia’s fashion choice, it’s unlikely he will enjoy seeing a bunch of towels with his mug splattered on it.
