The live blog of doom has returned…
4:29 – My local CBS affiliate is showing Browns/Cowboys in overtime. That’s a problem.
4:54 – We join this game in progress. The Colts lead by 7. New England’s D is awful.
END OF FIRST QUARTER: COLTS 14, PATRIOTS 7
5:02 – Nate Solder can’t block Dwight Freeney. Oh lord. Patriots need to settle for a field goal…woops. Nevermind. Gostkowski shanks one to the right.
5:07 – The Patriots force a three and out by batting down a series of Luck throws. Finally, a good defensive series.
5:08 – Well, lookee here. The Patriots get a defensive stop and then Julian Edelman runs a punt back 68 yards. Mini-Welker strikes to tie it up.
PATRIOTS 14, COLTS 14
5:15 – Prince Luck has run into serious woes. New England’s newest Patriot, Aqib Talib, runs back an interception 59 yards to give the Patriots their first lead of the game. Luck is missing high…way high.
PATRIOTS 21, COLTS 14
5:22 – It’s still very odd to see Indy with Peyton prowling the field…especially when Reggie Wayne makes catches.
5:26 – It feels like every New England follows a similar script. They get the football for the second half’s start and then go up by two possessions…and then ride the lead out to a victory.
5:30 – Indy answers with a field goal after Luck leads them down the field on a series of sharp passing plays. Feels like Brady hasn’t been on the field for an hour.
PATRIOTS 21, COLTS 17
5:37 – New England is methodically moving the ball downfield…
5:41 – Gostkowski kicks a field goal after Indy forces an incomplete pass from King Brady with some pretty strong pass rush.
PATRIOTS 24, COLTS 17
5:47 – Indy tries to provide an answer of sorts late in the second quarter…
5:52 – The Colts use the Dallas Cowboys/ Philadelphia Eagles school of clock management and put kicker Adam Vinatieri on the field for a 58-yard field gaol.
5:54 – Vinatieri missed and the Patriots head into the locker room with a touchdown lead at the half.
HALFTIME: PATRIOTS 24, COLTS 17
6:09 – As mentioned earlier, every New England home game seems to go this way. Patriots get a lead and then have the first possession to start the third quarter…big series for the Colts.
6:12 – Brady puts an exclamation point on the third quarter’s initial drive. Touchdown pass to little Welker.
PATRIOTS 31, COLTS 17
6:16 – Luck and the Colts answer with a punt. Although, I must admit that Luck is incredibly gifted. His team? Eh, not so much.
6:24 – Patriots keep trying to hammer with Ridley…totally not working.
6:29 – All of a sudden, Indy’s O is rather stagnant. They can’t run the ball with Donald Brown.
6:30 – Andrew Luck fumbles…recovered by the Pats. Trouble is abound for Indy.
6:31 – One play later, Gronk mode. Woah boy. It’s blowout time in Foxborough. That escalated quickly.
PATRIOTS 38, COLTS 17
6:37 – This might actually be a first-round playoff game. Although, I’d much rather see Peyton try to beat Indy by 9,000 points in one game.
6:39 – Every Indy running play appears to be going for a loss of two yards. Crazy.
END OF THIRD: PATRIOTS 38, COLTS 17
6:45 – Uh oh. Luck gets pick-sixed by frequent turnstile Alfonzo Dennard. No passing of the torch here. More like the torch getting placed in an inappropriate spot.
PATRIOTS 45, COLTS 17
6:58 – The Colts trim the deficit with a TD pass to PY CHUI. Ok, maybe not him but the dude named after the hotel.
PATRIOTS 45, COLTS 24
7:03 – New England gets the ball back and they are clearly ready to drop 50. A long reception by Edelman puts the Pats inside of the 10.
7:04 – One player later, Ridley goes up the for a short touchdown run.
PATRIOTS 52, COLTS 24
7:05 – Just for giggles the Patriots should just go ahead and try to get 60. Still plenty of time left.
7:08 – Clearly.
7:10 – Edelman is off on another punt return. This time 49 yards. Luckily, the Colts show some passion and actually make a tackle.
7:16 – Shane Vereen finishes another drive off for the Pats. The hole was so big that the immortal Ben Vereen could have scored. Yikes.
PATRIOTS 59, COLTS 24
7:23 – After another Luck interception, Brady is pulled from the game for Ryan Mallett. You know it’s a butt-whipping when Mallett enters the fray.
7:28 – Mercifully, it’s over. Fun fact…Brady and Luck didn’t meet up until after the game was over. Slightly interesting.
FINAL: PATRIOTS 59, COLTS 24
SUMMARY: Welp, any aspersions we had about the Colts being a serious contender in the AFC are now gone.
New England is right back on course.
