I don’t like to mix politico talk with football but unfortunately in this circumstance, it could not be helped.
By now, most NFL followers know that prior to last night’s Indy/Tampa Bay game, ESPN wisely decided to pull the time-honored theme song of Monday Night Football sung by Hank Williams Jr. due to the country singer’s controversial statements regarding Adolph Hitler and President Barack Obama.
Today, Williams Jr. issued an apology regarding his puzzling comments on FOX News:
The thought of the leaders of both parties jukin’ [sic] and high fiven’ [sic] on a golf course, while so many families are struggling to get by, simply made me boil over and make a dumb statement, and I am very sorry if it offended anyone. I would like to thank all my supporters. This was not written by some publicist.
No matter the apology, people need to learn that tossing Hitler’s name around with spaghetti sauce is likely to generate an emotional response (the Anti-Defamation League believes Williams Jr. owes Holocaust survivors an apology) let alone the President of the United States.
Perhaps ESPN retiring the song permanently is in its best interests anyhow. It’s probably time to put it out to pasture and tell Rockin’ Randall all his rowdy friends need to call it a day.
