Months after receiving a year-long suspension over Bountygate, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is back in the news but for non-football matters this time around.
He filed for divorce from his wife of 20 years, Beth, back on June 14, according to The Times-Picayune on Monday.
The court petition cites a conflict of personalities between the Paytons as grounds for the divorce.
The Paytons resided in Westlake, Texas until the former Dallas Cowboys assistant coach recently moved out.
According to the report, the proceedings may get messy thanks to Beth’s desire to establish residency in Texas for the couple’s two children:
Beth Payton, however, filed a counter-petition for divorce on June 26 which requested that she be appointed the custodian “who has the exclusive right to designate the primary residence of the children in Tarrant County, Texas.” The petition asks that the court schedule Sean Payton’s access to their children “as necessary to protect the health and well-being of the children.”
Payton already had his hands full after Roger Goodell banned him from coaching for an entire season. Now, he’ll be rather busy with lawyers and his soon-to-be ex-wife, with whom he would have celebrated a 20th wedding anniversary with on July 11.
This is just another headache for the embattled Payton, who is probably counting the days until the 2012 season concludes.
